Things remain calm…for now.
The novelty of volunteering is still fresh, and the on-air talent’s vocal cords have not yet gone South. The fundraiser is in its early, carefree stages when by the end of each shift the coffee carafes still contain some Joe and the phone banks remain in managed little rows.
But this will all end soon. The good ship WBUR may have passed through the inner eye wall, but the crew with mounting concern now scans the approaching horizon.
And things don’t look so good.
The fun really doesn’t begin until we inch closer to deadline and those numbers on the board don’t tick as generously upward as hoped. Then the red lights begin flashing, the alarm’s high-pitched staccato squeals sounding the accompaniment. Marketing staff rush past one another in hallways as the remaining staff clutch their desks and brace for impact.
It is an altogether unpleasant business that you can help to bring to a merciful conclusion with a generous pledge.
